Choosing and Installing Deer Fencing

The over-population of deer in the country has led to the devastation of many gardens. An influx of deer in a residential area can lead to serious garden damage. The key to keeping a garden free from this kind of harm is installing sturdy deer fencing that will be cost-effective and reliable. There are some things to remember when installing deer fencing, as well. Here are a few tips for choosing and installing deer fencing to keep your garden undisturbed.

Types of Deer Fencing

It is very important to choose reliable deer fencing that requires minimal maintenance. Electric fencing is economical, but many gardeners take issue with physically shocking the approaching deer. Additionally, deer have been known to jump electric fences cleanly. Wire fencing is low maintenance and cost effective, and comes in several options for height and length. It can be made with either metal or synthetic materials. Synthetic wire is more affordable, and is often longer lasting than metal.  Plastic fencing also eliminates the problem of rusting, and also helps protect against the tearing of clothing or delicate skin that is often common with wire fencing.

Installation

Remembering how easily deer can jump these barriers, choose a fence with a decent height to prevent it from happening. A fence with a height of eight feet or so should be sufficient on its own. It is also an option to choose fencing anywhere from four to six feet high, if a row of shrubbery is planted a few paces behind to discourage the deer from jumping. Fasten fencing to surrounding trees to keep the barrier looking as natural as possible, and use posts in place of trees whenever necessary. Use roofing nails or staples to secure the fence to the trees or posts. Make sure to stretch the fencing tightly—this will increase the sturdiness of the fence and aesthetics.

Ground Support

While deer do jump over fences, they more often try to push the structure down by force. Therefore, a sturdy fence is absolutely necessary to thoroughly protect a garden area. Ground support is key: digging stakes into the ground will help create a stronger barrier that deer will have a hard time pushing against in order to slip beneath. Try inserting these stakes (hooked, if possible) in intervals—one every five or six feet should work quite well.

Important Reminders

There are other ways for deer fencing to corrode besides rust; make sure to purchasing fencing that will resist acids and chemicals and UV rays, as well. Additionally, don’t forget about the posts! They must be able to withstand damage, as well; choose quality material that will withstand leaning deer and any bouts of bad weather. Strengthening the fence even further is achieved by running a bit of wire along the top. Lastly, alert the deer of the presence of the barrier if possible. Many gardeners choose to do this by tying strips of fabric or plastic along the fence every few feet. Use light, easily visible shades.

In order to maintain a healthy, fruitful garden, all measures must be taken against its destruction. The tendency of these overpopulated deer to wreak havoc on gardens has become a nationwide problem. However, taking proper and thorough precautions against such invasions is simpler than it may seem. Choosing sturdy, reliable deer fencing is the first step, and proper installation will ensure success in defending any vulnerable garden. Protect your garden against curious and hungry deer, and your garden will continue to thrive!
