Tips on Using Natural Burlap

Natural burlap, (jute), is a thick, durable fabric commonly used in the horticulture industry for wrapping root balls as well as wrapping the plant material to protect against wind burn when transporting. Landscapers use Natural Burlap for stabilizing bare slopes until grass or other plant media grow enough to hold the soil together. Also use for winter wrap, as well as for numerous garden projects, including gathering and transporting leaves, lawn erosion control and various types of plant cover.

Wind and Sun Control

Natural Burlap is a wonderful material for controlling wind and shading from sun in any garden area.

Speed Up Sprouting

Burlap helps immensely in speeding up the rate of seed germination. Cilantro, parsley and carrots are some of the slower-sprouting seeds that will respond favorably to a strip of burlap laid over their beds. To speed up germination, just soak a strip of burlap in water and lay it on top of the area where these seeds have just been sown. Water the natural burlap more thoroughly with water. The seeds will stay moist, as will the soil beneath the burlap. Check moisture levels often and remove the burlap at the first sight of sprouting. The sprouted seedlings will then be exposed to sunlight, and proper flowering will begin!

Sheet Mulching

If the time has come for a new raised bed, use the technique of sheet mulching with natural burlap to forego the usual digging. Simply mow the intended area for the raised bed and layer damp cardboard on top. Place grass clippings and compost over this cardboard, followed by layers of burlap. Let this sit for around half a year, and all of the materials will have decomposed to the point where a beautiful new bed will be awaiting future gardening activity. Sheet mulching is an easy, inexpensive way to build a new raised bed, and burlap plays an integral part in the slow decomposition. Make sure plenty is on hand when the time comes to build a new raised bed.

Natural burlap is an indispensable material to integrate into any gardening routine. Its availability and affordability make it a smart addition to a gardener’s tool kit. Ensure that there is plenty of natural burlap on hand come the next growing season, and the cheap, simple garden fixes it offers will keep you hooked for many seasons to come.

Other uses include protecting newly laid concrete from frost as well as direct sunlight. Simply wet the burlap and suspend it a bit above the new concrete. Use for arts and crafts.
