Tips on Using Tomato Greenhouses
Tomato greenhouses are one easy-to-use product that can encourage fruit production from tomato plants, in addition to protecting them against harm. If you’re growing Tomatoes plants, consider the addition of a tomato greenhouse to make the process an easier one.
Tomato Greenhouses
Tomato plants will thrive in their own mini-greenhouses. The perforated plastic film will allow for both heat retention and air circulation, resulting in faster growth and protection against pests and weather damage. Most greenhouse shields can fit over plant cages, or the film itself can be attached to stakes surrounding the plants. Make sure to stake tomato plants correctly, as this will prevent collapsing before the end of summer harvest. See below for tips on staking and proper tomato plant care.
Staking
Gardeners who choose to grow tomatoes almost always use stakes to uphold the plants firmly. We all know how heavy tomatoes themselves can be (here’s hoping!), and this often leads to a limp or broken plant. Dig a cane in a spot of soil surrounding the tomato plant (usually made with bamboo), and firmly secure it to the stems with thin rope or twine. More than one knot may be necessary, depending on the strength of the stems and the particular placement of the knots. Focus on plant stability during this process, and the tomato greenhouse will be that much more effective.
Watering and Feeding
Watering plants is key for any gardening project, and tomato plants are certainly no exception; in fact, they tend to respond quite favorably to what may seem like an excess of water. As long as tomato plants are monitored each day to determine how often they should be watered, there should be little to no danger of their drying out. Some gardeners choose to supply additional feed to their tomato plants, which may help keep the tomato plants producing fruit. Check out any local greenhouses or garden supply stores to see about additional feeding.
Removing Side shoots
Tomato plants tend to produce several leaves, and this can put the fruits in danger of being too shaded from the sun. Tomatoes need a good amount of sunlight in order to ripen and grow thoroughly. To prevent this, always remove side shoots. They grow between the main stem and any branches that produce fruit. Simply grab these side shoots, bend sharply and break them free from the branch. It is best to make as clean a break as possible to prevent any further growing of side shoots. If any part of the side shoot is missed, just nip that piece off of the stem afterward.
Growing tomatoes can often seem like a time-consuming task that is only appropriate for the most green-thumbed people in the world. However, growing tomato plants is not as impossible as it may seem to the inexperienced gardener. There are products available to help cultivate healthy, productive tomato plants, and tomato greenhouses are indispensible in this way. As long as proper care is taken to ensure healthy, hearty tomato plants growing within the greenhouses, there is no reason everyone cannot enjoy the pleasures of growing their own tomatoes. Consider investing in tomato greenhouses, and enjoy the (actual) fruits of your labor!
